What should I look for when choosing a guardian for my child?

On Behalf of Law Offices of Linda J. MacKay | Jun 28, 2022 | Estate Planning

When you have a child, you are responsible for every aspect of that child’s care. You must also provide for that child should you die. With guardianship, you can make arrangements for your child’s care in the event of your death.

Losing a parent can be traumatic for your child. You need to find a guardian who will take the best possible care of your child. Here is what to look for.

Someone who is capable of caring for your child

Choose someone who would make a good parent. You want a person or couple who can take all your children so they will not have to live in separate homes. Also, the person you choose must have the finances to support your children.

Someone who shares your values

Find someone who shares your values and religious beliefs. You will give this person permission to decide important issues about your child. Look for someone who shares your parenting style. Do not choose someone with a drug or alcohol addiction. Also, make sure the person is young enough to care for your children until they are grown.

Do not let others try to influence your decision. At the same time, make sure the person you are considering is willing to care for your children. This person may have a legitimate reason for not taking such responsibility.

No one can ever love your children the way you do. Choose the right guardian to ensure someone loves and cares for your children in the best way possible.
